Step by step

  1. Make the finished cover 1 cm smaller than the insert; for a 45 cm insert, cut the front 47 x 47 cm (1.5 cm seams).
  2. Cut two back panels so they overlap by about 7.5 cm.
  3. Hem each back's opening edge: press 1 cm, then 2 cm, stitch.
  4. Lay front right side up, backs right side down on top, overlapping.
  5. Sew round all four sides with 1.5 cm seams, pivoting at corners; backstitch over the overlap.
  6. Clip corners, neaten edges, turn, push out corners and press.
