How we score

Every SewSift verdict is Researched. Here is exactly what that means.

Bobbin, the SewSift thread spool

I tick off every source before a score goes up.
– Bobbin

What "Researched" means

We read maker specs and manuals, UK retailer pages, independent reviews and owner reports, then write a verdict that cites every source with the date we checked it. We only claim testing when we have done it. Today none of our verdicts come from our own trials.

The score, out of 10

Core performance on paper: 3 points

Stitch quality reports, fabric range, features that matter for the job.

Ease for the target level: 2 points

Threading, bobbin system, controls, how clear the manual is.

Value at UK price: 2 points

What you get for the current UK price, inc VAT.

Reliability reports: 1.5 points

Owner reports, known faults, build.

UK support: 1.5 points

Warranty, UK dealers and servicing.

Scores are labelled provisional. They can change when prices move, a model is replaced or new owner reports appear. Changes go on our corrections page.

Prices

Prices are in pounds, including VAT, from a named UK shop, with the date we checked. If we can't find a current price we say so rather than guess.

Videos

We embed videos from their creators on YouTube and credit them. We don't copy or re-host anyone's video.

What we never do

No pay-to-rank

Makers and shops can't buy a score or a place in a list.

Researched, sources cited

Specs, manuals, maker pages and owner reports, each with a checked date.

UK prices and shops

GBP inc VAT, with the shop and the date we checked.
