Step by step

  1. Make the finished cover 0.4 in (1 cm) smaller than the insert; for a 18 in (45 cm) insert, cut the front 19 x 19 in (47 x 47 cm) (1.5 cm seams).
  2. Cut two back panels so they overlap by about 3 in (7.5 cm).
  3. Hem each back's opening edge: press 0.4 in (1 cm), then 0.8 in (2 cm), stitch.
  4. Lay front right side up, backs right side down on top, overlapping.
  5. Sew round all four sides with 0.6 in (1.5 cm) seams, pivoting at corners; backstitch over the overlap.
  6. Clip corners, neaten edges, turn, push out corners and press.
