Who it's for
Anyone who has never used a sewing machine, at any age. Grown-ups can do it alongside children.
  1. Gather a small kit
You need far less than shops suggest: scissors, pins, a tape measure, thread and some cotton.

  2. Pick (or borrow) a machine
Any working machine with straight stitch and zigzag will do. If you are buying, start with our shortlist.

  3. Wind a bobbin and thread up
The step that worries people most, and the one you will soon do without thinking.

  4. Sew on paper
With no thread, sew along lines drawn on paper. It teaches steering and speed, and it is safe for young sewists.
  5. Sew straight lines on cotton
Use a plain medium-weight cotton. Keep the fabric edge on the 1.5cm line on the needle plate.
  6. Turn a corner
Stop with the needle down, lift the foot, turn the fabric, lower the foot and carry on.
  7. Finish a seam
Zigzag the raw edges so they do not fray in the wash.

  8. Press as you go
Press each seam flat before sewing across it. It makes everything look neater.
  9. Try a zip
An invisible zip looks hard but is mostly careful pinning.

  10. Make a zipped pouch
Put it all together: two rectangles, one zip and finished seams. You have made something useful!
