Chain piecing
Chain piecing means feeding pairs of patches through the machine one after another without cutting the thread between them. It's faster and saves thread.
Half-square triangles (HSTs)
Put two squares right sides together, draw a diagonal, sew a quarter inch either side, cut on the line and press. You get two half-square triangle units.
How to bind a quilt by machine
Join binding strips, fold in half, sew to the quilt front with mitred corners, then fold to the back and stitch down by machine.
Sewing an accurate quarter-inch seam
Quilting uses a quarter-inch (about 6mm) seam. Small errors add up across a block, so get the seam right first with a quarter-inch foot or a guide and test it.
Making and basting a quilt sandwich
A quilt sandwich is backing (right side down), wadding, then the top (right side up), smoothed flat and held with pins, spray or tacking so it doesn't shift while you quilt.
