Using a clapper and point presser

A point presser and clapper is a wooden tool with a pointed top for pressing hard-to-reach areas such as collars, and a flat clapper base. You hold the clapper on a freshly steamed seam to trap the steam for a flatter seam or a harder crease.

Pressing as you sew: the basic routine

Press every seam before you cross it with another one. Set the seam flat, press it open or to one side, and use a press cloth on delicate or dark fabric.

Pressing, not ironing: the step that makes sewing look professional

Pressing is lifting and lowering the iron, not sliding it. Press every seam as you go and your projects look neater straight away.

Pressing quilt seams: open or to the side

Quilters either press seams to one side, usually towards the darker fabric, so seams can 'nest' at junctions, or press them open for flatter blocks. Both work; pick one per project and be consistent.

How to use a tailor's ham

A tailor's ham is a firm, rounded cushion you press curved seams over, such as darts, princess seams and sleeve heads, so they keep their shape instead of being flattened.
