Overlocker basics for beginners

An overlocker (serger) trims, sews and wraps the seam edge in one pass using three or four threads. It's for finishing and sewing stretch seams, not for zips or topstitching.

Pinny's tip
Keep a sewing machine for everything else. An overlocker adds to it; it doesn't replace it.

What you'll need
- Overlocker: three or four thread.
- Four cones of overlocker thread: cheaper than spools.
- Tweezers: for threading.
Step by step
- Learn the parts: the two needles, the two loopers, the knife and the differential feed dial.
- Use the colour-coded threading guide inside the cover.
- Sew a test on a scrap and check all threads form neat loops on the edge.
- Feed fabric so the knife trims a few millimetres and don't pull it.
- Never run over pins; the knife will hit them.
- Chain off at the end and secure the tail with a knot or seam sealant.
