What a walking foot does and when to use it

Bobbin, a SewSift mascot

A walking foot feeds the top layer at the same rate as the bottom one. Use it for quilts, thick layers, knits, checks and stripes you need to match.

Pinny's tip
Walking feet differ by brand and model, and some machines have a built-in dual feed instead (for example IDT or AcuFeed), so check what yours needs.

What you'll need

Step by step

  1. Remove the presser foot and the presser foot holder.
  2. Slip the fork of the walking foot's lever onto the needle clamp so it moves with the needle.
  3. Lower the presser foot and tighten the screw on the presser bar securely.
  4. Turn the handwheel slowly towards you to check the needle doesn't hit the foot.
  5. Use it for straight-line quilting, grids, in-the-ditch and gentle curves.
