How to sew in a straight line

Bobbin, a SewSift mascot

Watch the seam guide, not the needle. Line the fabric edge up with a mark on the needle plate and let the machine feed the fabric while your hands just guide it.

Pinny's tip
Practise on lined paper with no thread in the machine. The holes show you exactly where you wandered.

What you'll need

Step by step

  1. Find the line on your needle plate that matches your seam allowance, often 1.5cm on UK patterns. Add a strip of masking tape along it if it's hard to see.
  2. Put the fabric under the foot with the raw edge against that line and lower the foot.
  3. Start slowly. Rest your hands lightly either side of the foot; don't push or pull.
  4. Keep your eyes on the fabric edge against the guide, not on the needle.
  5. Stop with the needle down if you need to adjust, lift the foot, straighten, lower and carry on.
  6. Backstitch a few stitches at each end to lock the seam.
