Interfacing explained: what it is and how to fuse it

Bobbin, a SewSift mascot

Interfacing is a hidden layer that gives collars, waistbands, button stands and bags their shape. Choose one a little lighter than your fabric and fuse it with pressure, not sliding.

Pinny's tip
Always fuse a test square first. If you can see a bubbly or stiff patch from the right side, go lighter.

What you'll need

Step by step

  1. Pick the weight: as a rule, the same as or lighter than your fabric. Knits need stretch interfacing.
  2. Cut the interfacing using the pattern piece. Some patterns trim it slightly smaller to reduce bulk in the seams.
  3. Lay the fabric wrong side up and the interfacing on top, glue side (rough or shiny dots) down.
  4. Cover with a pressing cloth. Press with an up-and-down motion, holding each spot for the time the maker gives (often around 10 seconds), with some steam if recommended.
  5. Let it cool flat before you move it, so the glue sets.
  6. Check the edges are stuck. If not, press again.
