How to read a sewing pattern

Bobbin, a SewSift mascot

Start with the envelope or cover sheet for sizes, fabric and notions, then read the instructions through once, then find the symbols on the pieces: grainline, fold, notches, dots and cutting lines.

Pinny's tip
Read the whole instruction sheet once before you cut. It saves most beginner mistakes.

What you'll need

Step by step

  1. Check the size chart against your body measurements, not your shop size.
  2. Read the fabric suggestions and the amount needed for your size and fabric width.
  3. Find the cutting layout for your size and fabric width.
  4. Learn the symbols: grainline arrow, place-on-fold bracket, notches (triangles), dots and lengthen/shorten lines.
  5. Read the instructions start to finish before you cut.
