How to read a sewing pattern

Start with the envelope or cover sheet for sizes, fabric and notions, then read the instructions through once, then find the symbols on the pieces: grainline, fold, notches, dots and cutting lines.

Read the whole instruction sheet once before you cut. It saves most beginner mistakes.
What you'll need
- The pattern: envelope, instructions and tissue or PDF pieces.
- Highlighter: to mark your size line.
- Notebook: to note changes.
Step by step
- Check the size chart against your body measurements, not your shop size.
- Read the fabric suggestions and the amount needed for your size and fabric width.
- Find the cutting layout for your size and fabric width.
- Learn the symbols: grainline arrow, place-on-fold bracket, notches (triangles), dots and lengthen/shorten lines.
- Read the instructions start to finish before you cut.

Common mistakes
- Buying by shop size. Pattern sizes run differently; use measurements.
- Ignoring the grainline. The garment hangs crooked.
- Not transferring markings. Dots and notches are how pieces line up later.
