Dressmaking: a beginner's guide

Making your own clothes: patterns, measurements, fabric and the order to learn things in.
Dressmaking is making clothes, usually from a paper or PDF pattern, on a home sewing machine with a bit of hand finishing.
- Choose a pattern by your body measurements, not your shop size.
- Start with a stable woven cotton. Leave slippery and stretchy fabrics until later.
- Pre-wash fabric before cutting so it does not shrink after you sew it.
- Learn the basics first: straight seams, seam finishes, hems, then zips and buttons.
- Simple first garments: an elastic-waist skirt, pyjama bottoms or a boxy top.

Make a test version (a toile) in cheap fabric before cutting into something special.
