How to stitch hitomezashi (persimmon flower)

A grid pattern of horizontal then vertical rows.
Step by step
- Mark a square grid on the fabric.
- Start by coming up three stitches ahead, stitch back, then sew forwards over them to secure.
- Stitch horizontal rows along grid lines: rows 1 and 2 in the same position, then rows 3 to 5 shifted by one square.
- Treat row 5 as the next row 1 and repeat.
- Then stitch the vertical rows the same way.
- Finish by stitching three small stitches back on the reverse.
