Machine embroidery: a beginner's guide

An embroidery machine stitches a digital design for you. Your job is choosing the file, stabiliser, thread and hooping well.
- Embroidery machines read stitch files, not pictures. Renaming a JPG to a stitch format does not make it embroidery.
- Formats differ by brand: PES (Brother, Baby Lock), JEF (Janome), EXP (Bernina, Melco), VP3 (Husqvarna Viking, Pfaff), DST (many commercial machines).
- Stabiliser under the fabric is what stops puckers and shifting.
- Hooping should be firm and flat, not stretched.
- Many machines include built-in designs to start with.
