Bargello: a beginner's guide

One straight stitch, endless patterns.
- Bargello is needlepoint made of upright straight stitches in a pattern.
- It is also called Florentine work or flame stitch, after chairs in the Bargello palace in Florence.
- Patterns are charted on a grid; count how many holes each stitch skips.
- Traditional designs use many shades of one colour.
- It is very durable: good for cushions and upholstery, but not clothing.
