How to choose fabric for a pattern

Bobbin, a SewSift mascot

Start with the pattern's fabric suggestions, then match weight, drape and stretch. Stable cotton is easiest for beginners; slippery, sheer and very stretchy fabrics are harder.

What you'll need

Step by step

  1. Read the suggested fabrics on the pattern.
  2. Check the fibre: natural fibres include cotton, silk, linen and wool; synthetics are made from man-made fibres.
  3. Check drape: does it hang softly or hold its shape?
  4. For knits, test stretch against the pattern's stretch guide.
  5. For a first project, pick stable woven cotton.
  6. Buy extra for prewashing, matching prints and mistakes.
