Choosing fabric: a beginner's guide
Which fabrics are easiest to start with, which to save for later, and how to match fabric to a pattern.

Bobbin's checklist
Start with stable woven cotton such as quilting cotton, poplin or chambray. It presses well, doesn't slip and shows mistakes kindly.

$Easiest to sew
- Quilting cotton: firm, stable and easy to press; the easiest fabric to learn on.
- Cotton poplin: smooth and light; shirts and dresses.
- Chambray and cotton lawn: soft drape but still stable.
- Calico: cheap; ideal for toiles and practice.
$$Next steps
- Linen and linen blends: lovely drape, frays more, creases.
- Stable jersey (cotton with some elastane): a first knit; use a ballpoint or stretch needle.
- Medium-weight denim and drill: trousers and jackets; use a jeans needle.
$$$Save for later
- Silk, satin and chiffon: slippery and sheer; need fine needles and patience.
- Very stretchy knits and swimwear: need stretch needles and stretch stitches or an overlocker.
- Velvet and faux fur: the pile slips and sheds, so cut one layer at a time with the pile running the same way.
Skip for now
- Slippery or sheer fabric for a first project.
- Buying exactly the pattern amount: allow extra for prewashing, mistakes and matching prints.
