Bobbin's checklist
Start with stable woven cotton such as quilting cotton, poplin or chambray. It presses well, doesn't slip and shows mistakes kindly.
$Easiest to sew
  • Quilting cotton: firm, stable and easy to press; the easiest fabric to learn on.
  • Cotton poplin: smooth and light; shirts and dresses.
  • Chambray and cotton lawn: soft drape but still stable.
  • Calico: cheap; ideal for toiles and practice.
$$Next steps
  • Linen and linen blends: lovely drape, frays more, creases.
  • Stable jersey (cotton with some elastane): a first knit; use a ballpoint or stretch needle.
  • Medium-weight denim and drill: trousers and jackets; use a jeans needle.
$$$Save for later
  • Silk, satin and chiffon: slippery and sheer; need fine needles and patience.
  • Very stretchy knits and swimwear: need stretch needles and stretch stitches or an overlocker.
  • Velvet and faux fur: the pile slips and sheds, so cut one layer at a time with the pile running the same way.
