Cutting and patterns
Cutting and patterns: technique guides for US sewists.

I poke through every pattern and product so you only get the best.

How to choose your sewing pattern size
Pick the size by your measurements, then check the finished garment measurements to see how much ease is built in. Blend between sizes if your bust, waist and hip fall in different ones.
How to cut out a sewing pattern
Lay the fabric flat on grain, place pieces as the cutting layout shows, check every grainline with a ruler, pin or weight them down, and cut with long smooth strokes.
Prewashing fabric and finding the grain
Wash fabric the way you will wash the finished item, then straighten the grain before cutting. Two dull steps that stop clothes shrinking and twisting.
How to read a sewing pattern
Start with the envelope or cover sheet for sizes, fabric and notions, then read the instructions through once, then find the symbols on the pieces: grainline, fold, notches, dots and cutting lines.
Using a rotary cutter safely
A rotary cutter with a self-healing mat and acrylic ruler cuts straight, accurate strips fast. Cut away from you, keep fingers on the ruler away from the edge, and close the blade every time you put it down.
How to take your body measurements
Measure bust, waist and hip in your underwear with a flexible tape held level and snug but not tight. A friend helps; a mirror will do.
