Patchwork: a beginner's guide

Patchwork sews pieces of fabric together into a bigger design. Accurate cutting and a steady 1/4 inch seam are the whole secret.
Patchwork, or 'pieced work', joins pieces of fabric into a larger design, usually built from repeating geometric shapes that are carefully measured and cut.
- Most patterns use a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
- Simple shapes come first: squares (four-patch, nine-patch), strips, then half-square triangles.
- Pre-cut packs such as 5 inch charm squares make a first top easy.
- Patchwork tops are usually layered and quilted, but can also become cushions or bags.
- Britain has a long patchwork history: the Quilters' Guild holds the 1718 Silk Patchwork Coverlet, the earliest known dated British patchwork.
