Common needlepoint mistakes and fixes

Twisted canvas, thin coverage, worn thread and lumpy backs.
- Canvas pulled out of square: use stretcher bars, use basketweave for big areas, and block the finished piece.
- Thread wearing thin: use lengths of about 18 in (46 cm).
- Thin, patchy coverage: half cross saves thread but is thinner and wears least well. Use continental or basketweave.
- Ridges on the front: tails ending in the same place. Stagger where threads start and stop.
- Fraying canvas edges: tape them before you start.
